Carnegie ∘ Passive House Aligned ∘
Renovation + Second-Storey Addition
This 1940s brick veneer home belonged to a young family who wanted comfort, clean air, and long-term performance, without leaving their neighbourhood. We retained the charm of the original façade while reworking the internal layout, adding a new first floor, and rebuilding the envelope to Passive House standards.
The home achieved 0.51 ACH (Air Changes per Hour) in a blower door test, a rigorous standard of airtightness. That means the home leaks less than one full air change per hour under pressure, keeping internal temperatures stable and outside air where it belongs. This level of control reduces energy use, prevents moisture issues, and ensures consistent comfort year-round.
Performance was integrated throughout: triple-glazed timber windows, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), continuous insulation, and thermal bridge-free construction. Together, these systems deliver a home that operates quietly in the background — no hot spots, no draughts, no reactive heating or cooling.
